The new north wing at Taymouth Castle is of quality contemporary design, befitting of the World Heritage site, and is both inspired and inspiring.
It will house the hotel’s state of the art spa and also 69 rooms and luxury suites. It is situated behind the castle in a courtyard area that originally housed sheds and garages and is enclosed between two avenues of trees. It is connected to its illustrious neighbour by a glass link, which is at first floor level, so effectively as you travel to and from the Castle it is through the trees.
The north wing itself is a balance between sensitive design and contemporary architecture. We have had to respect and consider the height, elevations, and alignment of the Castle and were very much inspired by it but have been careful not to pastiche it.
The new building doesn’t compete with the castle itself but compliments it, with a beautiful corner tower being the most interesting feature which was inspired by the castle’s own grand tower. The tower is over the pool area of the spa and is double height so it will be a fantastic experience. The walls around the pool will be glass so you will be able to look onto the gardens and it will feel like you are swimming outside.
The materials we are using will also be sensitive to the overall look of the castle. On the ground floor we will be using timber to keep a warm and friendly look and above that level, light grey course render which is sympathetic to the castle. Stone will also be used around the entrances near to the castle along with frameless glass so that it will feel and look like the new wing isn’t even touching the castle. The luxury suites on the top floor will be double height with picture windows so the sky will be reflected and the views of Perthshire’s beautiful scenery will be phenomenal.
